Melvin Lum is a Director in the Litigation, Arbitration & Dispute Resolution Practice.

His main areas of practice are in banking, finance-related, corporate and commercial disputes. His practice has seen him act in aviation, insolvency, insurance, professional negligence, shareholders, telecommunication, tenancy and transnational disputes.

Melvin graduated from the National University of Singapore and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2004. He won an Advocacy award for being one of the top performers in his cohort and was an adjunct tutor for the Advocacy Course for the NUS Law Faculty. Melvin is now an advocacy trainer with the Singapore Institute of Legal Education.

Melvin also sits on the Executive Committee of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Holy Family Conference), whose mission is to work with, care and provide for the poor and disadvantaged in the community. He also has a Level One certification in the Singapore Coach Excellence Programme awarded by Sport Singapore, the statutory body tasked with developing a holistic sports culture for Singapore.

In the 2022 and 2023 editions of Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific, Melvin was recognised as a Litigation Star in the Commercial and Transactions practice area.

Matters of significance in which Melvin has been involved in include the following:

  • Acting for the largest private investor in Ukraine’s energy sector against a Swiss bank in an SIAC arbitration involving a claim sum of over S$32 million.
  • Acting for a claimant in a blockchain technology related dispute involving cryptocurrency and NFT trading with claims exceeding US$ 1 million.
  • Acting for an international media group in an SIAC arbitration concerning a complex dispute relating to a proposed joint venture for satellite pay television services in Indonesia, with claims totalling over US$1.75 billion.
  • Acting for an Asian company in ICC arbitrations relating to the development, construction, management and operation of an oil storage and oil blending complex and supporting quay and port facilities, with claims and counterclaims totalling over US$500 million.
  • Acting for a Singapore company in a London based mediation and LMAA arbitration involving a claim for over S$10 million.
  • Acting for an international bank in investigations into potential regulatory breaches.
  • Acting for a leading firm of auditors to defend a claim for professional negligence.
  • Acting for a local director in proceedings in the Supreme Court of Singapore and London arbitral proceedings to defend a US$17 million claim.
  • Acting for a Chief Financial Officer of a listed company in charges under the Securities and Futures Act relating to breach of SGX rules.
  • Acting for an airline in a multi-million MRO related claim.
  • Acting for a private jet owner in a cross-border dispute over claims for rent.
